Obituary: James Carroll

December 16, 1882

Ed. Lakeside Pres.

The death of James Carroll, which occurred at an early hour Tuesday morning, takes away another of the oldest residents of the place.  He had lived to see the age of 73 years, nearly fifty of which had been spent amid these scenes in a busy and honorable life.

Deceased was born in Lenox, Mass., Oct. 9, 1809.  At the age of seven years, his parents moved to Herkimer county of this State.  Very early in life he married Miss Elmira Davis, of that place, and they raised a family of nine children, seven of whom are living.  His wife died about six years ago, and he afterward married Mrs. Redick, who also departed this life the past year.

About forty years ago, he engaged in the meat business, which he followed until ten or eleven years ago, when he and his son Nehemiah purchased the grist mill property, which has since been owned and managed between them.

He had been a prominent member of the Methodist Church during the past forty years, and was a useful, worthy and much respected citizen.
