Quite an excitement was created on Lake Street Saturday night. Two rigs coming in opposite directions collided. One was driven by Julius Lavancher and the other by Dan Quage. The latter's rig was badly wrecked. Lavancher's wagon escaped with but little damage. [1]

    • ... The first was that of Lorin Lavancher, who was arrested by order of the Overseer of the Poor, charged with deserting his family and failing to provide them means of support. An investigation into the facts, however, showed that he had always supported his family as well as the average, although he and his wife were frequently quarreling; and that this action was brought principally by her because of his association with other women, as she declares, which, if true, is of course very discreditable to him. Justice Lane released Lavancher, and he left town forthwith. [8]
    • Loren Lavancher was arrested as a disordertly person, in Clyde on Monday last, by a warrant issued by Police Justice Harding, and brought here, where his trial occupied nearly three days, when he was held to bail in the sum of $60. The facts of the case appear to be that Lavancher and wife are and have not been on very loving terms for the past two years. He neglected to furnish her and the family with the necessaries of life, and she had him brought home last fall, where he entered into an arrangement with Poormaster Yale to furnish $4 per week for their support. This the wife though was insufficient to keep clothe her and 5 children, and a very meager share of the $100 that Lavancher receives per month as wages, and she therefore determined to invoke the aid of justice on her behalf. Upon her complaint the present proceeding was brought. The sympathies of the people were entirely in favor of the women and were carried to such a pitch that the justice had to silence the growls of disapprobation which were heard when the case a phase unfavorable to the complaintant. Overseer of the Poor Long, and Attorney Wilder, who defended Lavancher, at one time nearly came to blows in the presence of the Court, and were threatened with arrest if they did not cool down. They cooled. Albert Yale and J.A. Turek thought $4 per week was enough to the family; others thought differently, among those the Justice. Lavancher found bail in the persons of H.W. Travis and John Shuler; and we learn he is moving his family out of the county, thinking perhaps, the bonds are invalid except in the County. Landgraff appeared for the prosecution. [9]

      Re: Christina Unknown
Comments (Christina Unknown b. Abt. 1832 Canada): Regarding Christina LaVancher (whose maiden name is YOUNG or YOUNGS), the 1880 Federal Census Record shows (on Line 24) that she is indeed MARRIED and not "widowed" as you have indicated. Thank you for correcting this entry on your site. I appreciate all the work that you've put into creating this for our ancestors on the North Shore of Oneida Lake.
