    • Our old residents are quickly passing away. We are called upon this week to record the death of Hugh Smith, which occurred yesterday afternoon at a quarter of two o'clock, at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 5 days.

Deceased was born in Ayshire, Scotland, March 17, 1804, and when he had rescued the age of 28 years, or in 18x2, he came to this country and to this vicinity, at Hillsboro, where his brother owned a saw mill. There he worked three or four years, and while there sawed the shingles for the first glass factory built here. Soon after, he purchased a farm, between here and Bernhard's Bay, upon which he resided most of his life, up to last Spring, when he sold it. He was by trade a carpet-weaver, and for two years worked at his trade in Amsterdam of this state.

About 1846, he was married to Miss Phoebe Jenkins, of Hillsboro. Four children, two boys and two girls, were born, all of whom are living.

He was known far and wide as a man of industry and honor; passionate, yet kind and forgiving; a good neighbor, and a worthy citizen.

Funeral services will be held next Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from the house. Rev. Chas. W. McCarthy, of the Presbyterian Church, Constantia, will oficate. [3]
